Improving Nutrition, Reducing Waste, and Building Life Skills
At Cadotte Lake School, the kitchen is always evolving to better support the health and well-being of our students. Recently, we shared a behind-the-scenes video highlighting some exciting changes happening in the kitchen — changes focused on nutrition, sustainability, and the future of school meals.
Moving Toward Reusable Solutions
One of the biggest changes students and staff will notice is the move toward reusable dishes and materials. By reducing disposable items, the kitchen is helping cut down on waste while creating a more sustainable environment for the school.
This shift not only supports the environment but also helps the kitchen focus resources where they matter most — providing better meals for students.

Investing the Budget in Nutrition
Another important focus is how the food budget is used. The goal is simple: maximize nutrition for students.
Instead of relying heavily on pre-packaged foods, the kitchen team is working toward using more ingredients that allow meals to be prepared fresh. This means students receive meals that are more balanced, nourishing, and supportive of their daily learning and activity.
Learning Skills for Life
The kitchen is also becoming a place for students to learn important life skills. By involving students in food preparation and discussions about ingredients and meals, they gain a better understanding of how food is made and where it comes from.
Students are also learning about food budgeting, helping them understand how to plan meals, make healthy choices, and manage costs — skills that will support them in their personal lives long after they leave school.

Looking Ahead: Fresh Food First
The long-term vision for the Cadotte Lake School kitchen is to continue moving toward fresh, homemade meals whenever possible.
This includes:
- Preparing more food from scratch
- Reducing processed and pre-packaged options
- Providing meals that fuel both body and mind
These changes take time, planning, and teamwork, but the direction is clear — creating a kitchen program that prioritizes student health and quality food.
Supporting Students Every Day
Food is an important part of the school day. When students are well nourished, they are better prepared to learn, participate, and enjoy their time at school.
The recent kitchen video shows the dedication and thought that goes into these improvements, and it reflects the school’s commitment to continually improving the experience for students.
As the kitchen continues to grow and evolve, the goal remains the same: providing healthy, thoughtful meals while helping students build the skills they need for life beyond the classroom.
