Supporting Mental Health: KTC Addiction and Mental Health Team Visits CLS

May 19, 2025

A Day of Professional Learning and Growth
Mental health awareness and support are crucial for both students and staff within a school community. On a recent professional development day, the KTC Addiction and Mental Health Team visited Cadotte Lake School to deliver a full day of learning focused on addiction and mental health supports. This session was designed to equip CLS staff with the knowledge and tools necessary to better understand and address mental health challenges within the school environment.

Understanding the Importance of Mental Health
The session began with an overview of how mental health directly impacts both students and educators. The KTC team shared valuable insights into the signs and symptoms of mental health struggles, emphasizing the importance of early recognition. Teachers learned how mental health challenges can affect classroom behavior, learning capabilities, and overall student well-being. These insights are critical as teachers are often the first to notice changes in student behavior.

Tools for Addressing Addiction and Mental Health
Throughout the day, the KTC team introduced practical tools and strategies for supporting students dealing with addiction or mental health issues. Topics included understanding trauma, building resilience, and creating supportive classroom environments. Teachers were given practical advice on how to communicate effectively with students who may be struggling, as well as strategies to create a safe and understanding space for open conversations.

The Role of Self-Care for Educators
A key component of the training highlighted the importance of self-care for educators. Mental health challenges are not limited to students; teachers and staff also face their own pressures and stressors. The KTC team emphasized that by learning to manage their own mental health, educators can be more effective in supporting their students. Strategies for self-care, stress management, and professional support were discussed, reinforcing the idea that a healthy educator is better equipped to support their students.

Fostering a Supportive School Environment
The visit from the KTC Addiction and Mental Health Team marks a significant step forward in fostering a supportive environment at Cadotte Lake School. By equipping staff with the knowledge and tools needed to address mental health, CLS is ensuring that students have the support they need to thrive both academically and emotionally.

Looking Forward
This professional learning day serves as just the beginning of ongoing efforts to prioritize mental health at Cadotte Lake School. With the continued support of community partners like KTC, CLS is committed to building a strong, resilient school environment where both staff and students feel supported and understood.

Gratitude for the KTC Team
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the KTC Addiction and Mental Health Team for their dedication and expertise. Their commitment to supporting our school community is deeply appreciated, and we look forward to continuing this important partnership in the future.
