Building Skills, Building Community: Our First Flex Friday

Building Skills, Building Community: Our First Flex Friday

Sep 23, 2025

On September 20th, Cadotte Lake School launched our very first Flex Friday, a new tradition we’ll be carrying on every other week. These special days are designed to give students a chance to learn in hands-on, meaningful ways, while connecting with each other, their teachers, and the land around us.

Task 1: Shelter Building

The day began with students grouped into teams, tasked with building a shelter using natural materials. With guidance from staff and community members, branches and saplings were gathered and carefully tied together. Piece by piece, the structures took shape. The activity challenged everyone to think creatively, work as a team, and practice patience. At the end, the pride was visible on every face as shelters stood tall across the field.

Task 2: Fire Building

Gathered in a circle, students learned how to safely start a fire with traditional techniques. The lesson was about more than just sparks—it was about patience, focus, and respect for fire as a life-giving tool. Watching the first flicker of smoke turn into a flame brought excitement and a sense of accomplishment.

Task 3: Banner Making

Meanwhile, another group turned to creativity. Students worked together on banners to represent their teams, adding color, designs, and names that showed their pride. The banners weren’t just decorations—they were symbols of teamwork, unity, and identity for each group.

Side Task: Tea Making Station

Off to the side, a calming space was set up for tea making. Students and staff brewed traditional teas, sharing stories and teachings. It was a chance to slow down, reflect, and enjoy community connection.

A Day of Learning and Growing

By the end of the day, the field was full of shelters, banners, and smiling faces. Flex Friday gave our students more than just lessons in survival skills—it gave them experiences they’ll remember, skills they can carry forward, and the joy of working together.

Closing Reflection:
Flex Friday is about more than tasks—it’s about learning through doing, building confidence, and honoring our way of life. This first day was a huge success, and we’re excited to see how our students grow in the weeks to come.
