Finding Rhythm and Unity: Lucas Coffey Brings Drumming to Cadotte Lake School

May 15, 2025

A Beat That Brings Us Together
This week, Cadotte Lake School was filled with the resounding echoes of drumbeats and the infectious energy of community as Lucas Coffey, the founder and managing director of Rhythm Rhythm Rhythm, shared his passion for drumming with students and staff. Lucas isn’t just a drummer—he’s a facilitator of connection, unity, and self-expression through rhythm. His journey from a troubled youth in Ontario to an inspirational community leader in Alberta speaks to the transformative power of music.

The Journey of Rhythm
Lucas’s path to drumming began in an unexpected place: a drum circle. What began as a moment of improvisational rhythm became a life-changing experience. Guided by his high school drama teacher, Lucas found solace and purpose in music, leading him to establish Rhythm Rhythm Rhythm—an artist-in-residence program that has impacted over 100,000 students across North America. His work emphasizes not just learning to drum, but understanding how rhythm can bring people together, foster communication, and ignite creativity.

The Power of Drum Circles
At Cadotte Lake School, Lucas introduced students to the essence of drum circles—a space where there is no leader, just collective creation. Students learned not only how to play but how to listen and collaborate. The experience allowed them to explore rhythm, teamwork, and the joy of making music together. Lucas’s vibrant energy and engaging teaching style made it easy for students of all ages to jump right in, tapping into their own creativity while respecting the collective rhythm of the group.

A Global Impact
Lucas is not only a local inspiration; his expertise extends globally. As a drum circle trainer with Arthur Hull’s Village Music Circles, Lucas has brought the power of rhythm to conferences and festivals across North America. His presence at events like the Drum Circle Facilitators Guild conferences, the Seattle World Rhythm Festival, and the REMO Centre for Music highlights his commitment to spreading the joy of music far and wide.

Building Bridges Through Music
The impact of Lucas’s work at Cadotte Lake School extends beyond just learning to play drums. It’s about building bridges—between students, between cultures, and within the community. Drumming has a unique ability to break down barriers, allowing participants to express themselves freely while feeling connected to those around them. Lucas’s message is clear: rhythm is universal, and everyone has a place in the circle.

Looking to the Future
Lucas’s visit marks just the beginning of new musical exploration at Cadotte Lake School. Inspired by his energy and passion, students are already eager to continue their journey with drumming, learning how music can be both a personal outlet and a community-building tool. With Lucas’s encouragement, they’re not just learning rhythm—they’re learning confidence, cooperation, and connection.
